Tried surfing last weekend and it went as expected. I met up with a buddy down at Del Monte beach next to the pier. He brought a 9' longboard and a shorter one as well. We both took turns on the longboard and it was a good chance for me to get used to the board.
I tried getting up a couple times but each time ended up with me swimming in the brisk Monterey Bay water...try, try again though so hopefully I'll get back out there soon.
